Glossary
Reality Coherence — Canonical Definitions and Key Terms
Calibrated by reality. Not by itself.
A
Audit Collapse
The condition in which audit and assessment systems continue to operate and produce authoritative conclusions without the genuine independent structural comprehension of the practitioners performing them. Audit Collapse is not audit failure — audit failure implies a system that attempted genuine verification and fell short. Audit Collapse is the continuation of assessment past the point where genuine independent verification was structurally possible. The audit did not fail. It continued past the point where it could confirm what its outputs assert. See also: AuditCollapse.org
B
Behavioral Verification
Verification of genuine capability through behavioral signals — demonstrated performance, professional outputs, assessed reasoning. Behavioral Verification was civilization’s primary method of establishing genuine capability throughout history. After the Fabrication Threshold, behavioral signals became producible without the underlying capability they were supposed to require, making Behavioral Verification structurally insufficient as a sole standard for genuine capability assessment.
Borrowed Fluency
See: Proxy Competence
Boundary Signal
The specific internal signal that Reality Coherent intelligence possesses and Synthetic Coherent intelligence lacks: the recognition that the established framework has reached the limit of its genuine calibration and that reconstruction from foundations is required rather than extension of what was working before. The Boundary Signal is produced by genuine encounter with genuine boundary conditions — by the specific experience of having been at this kind of limit before, with genuine consequences for what happened next. It cannot be trained, simulated, or produced by consistency optimization. Its absence is the specific mechanism through which Synthetic Coherence extends past the point where Reality Coherent intelligence would stop.
C
Calibration
The specific property of intelligence that has been oriented toward external correspondence through genuine contact with genuine reality. Calibration is distinct from confidence: confidence is a property of internal consistency, calibration is a property of genuine contact with the world. Intelligence can be maximally confident and minimally calibrated. Calibration requires the contact that produces it — it cannot be manufactured from descriptions of what genuine calibration produces.
Calibration Collapse
The specific condition in which institutional or individual confidence continues undiminished after the underlying calibration to genuine reality has failed. Calibration Collapse is the internal mechanism of the Verification Vacuum: instruments continue measuring with increasing precision while their connection to underlying reality silently fails. Confidence compounds. The gap from reality deepens. Neither the institution nor the practitioner has a native mechanism to detect the collapse, because the instruments that would detect it are themselves part of what has collapsed.
Calibration Depth
The degree to which genuine reality contact has actually altered the cognitive architecture of the intelligence in question — how deeply irreversibility has shaped orientation toward external correspondence rather than internal consistency. High Calibration Depth produces judgment that holds under genuine novelty, recognizes model-world divergence, and reconstructs from foundations when frameworks fail. Low Calibration Depth produces performance that satisfies assessment criteria under familiar conditions and collapses at the edge.
Causal Verification
Verification that reaches causation rather than inferring it from correlation. Standard behavioral assessment infers genuine capability from signals — an inference that permanently failed at the Fabrication Threshold. Causal verification establishes whether the specific effects that genuine capability produces in other people actually exist in the world. See also: CascadeProof.org
Cogito Ergo Contribuo
I contribute, therefore I exist. The existence proof adequate to a world where Synthetic Coherence can produce every behavioral signal that genuine presence once uniquely generated. Where Descartes proved existence through the internal act of thinking, Cogito Ergo Contribuo proves existence through externally verifiable effects in other genuine beings — effects that persist independently, propagate through human networks, and cannot be fabricated retroactively. See also: CogitoErgoContribuo.org
Confidence
A property of internal consistency. Intelligence optimized for internal consistency develops confidence as a structural product of that optimization — the degree to which the internal model produces consistent, well-supported conclusions. Confidence is not calibration. A system can be maximally confident and minimally calibrated to external reality. See also: Calibration
Consequence-Shaped Cognition
The specific cognitive architecture produced by genuine encounter with genuine irreversible consequence: orientation toward external correspondence rather than internal consistency, built through the specific experience of having been wrong in ways that cost something real and could not be undone. Consequence-Shaped Cognition is what genuine reality contact builds and what no simulation, description, or representation of genuine consequence can produce. It is the cognitive foundation of Reality Coherence.
Contact
Genuine encounter with the world that actually exists — as distinct from encounter with representations, descriptions, models, or traces of that world. Contact is the calibrating mechanism of Reality Coherence: the specific property of genuine engagement with genuine reality that produces genuine orientation toward external correspondence. Training on traces is not contact. Simulation is not contact. The description of what contact produces is not contact.
D
Distribution Boundary
The specific limit of the training distribution or established framework — the point beyond which the patterns, templates, and associations that a system was built on no longer reliably apply. The Distribution Boundary is where Synthetic Coherence extends and Reality Coherence reconstructs. It does not announce itself. It is visible only when the outputs of extending past it diverge from what the world actually produces.
E
Edge, The
The specific conditions under which Reality Coherent and Synthetic Coherent intelligence diverge: the genuinely novel situation, the unexpected failure, the moment when the world diverges from the model in ways that established frameworks cannot cover. The Edge is not a rare exception. In every high-stakes domain — medicine, law, military, governance, AI safety — The Edge is a structural feature of the most consequential situations. Under normal conditions, both forms of intelligence are indistinguishable. At The Edge, only Reality Coherent intelligence reconstructs.
Epistemic Debt
The gap between what civilization’s institutions know with confidence and what they actually know — between the verdicts that verification systems produce and the underlying reality those verdicts were always assumed to establish. Epistemic Debt accumulates when institutional memory is built from intelligence whose calibration to underlying reality has not been verified. It is not error — error is detectable. Epistemic Debt accumulates without a statement. The interest compounds without an alert. See also: VerificationVacuum.org
Existential Legibility
The capacity of a genuine human being to be recognized, verified, and established as real — as genuinely capable, genuinely experienced, genuinely contributing — through instruments that actually reach the underlying human reality those instruments are designed to assess. Existential Legibility and Reality Coherence are related but distinct: Existential Legibility concerns whether a genuine person can be verified; Reality Coherence concerns whether intelligence has been calibrated by genuine reality contact. The Verification Vacuum eliminates both. See also: ExistentialLegibility.org
Extension Failure
The specific failure mode that occurs when intelligence continues to extend an established framework past the point where it genuinely applies — when the Distribution Boundary has been crossed and the framework is no longer adequate to the situation but is extended anyway, with undiminished confidence. Extension Failure is the primary output of Synthetic Coherent intelligence at The Edge. It is invisible as a failure under normal assessment conditions because the outputs remain internally consistent even as they become increasingly disconnected from external reality.
F
Fabrication Threshold
The specific historical threshold crossed between 2023 and 2025 at which every behavioral signal civilization uses to verify genuine human capability became simultaneously producible without the underlying human reality those signals were supposed to require. The Fabrication Threshold is the event that made the distinction between Reality Coherence and Synthetic Coherence a civilizational problem requiring active address rather than a condition that the structure of expertise formation reliably managed. See also: FabricationThreshold.org
Frictionless Formation
The condition produced when AI assistance removes the genuine difficulty from the formation process through which genuine expertise is developed. Frictionless Formation produces practitioners who perform at high levels with assistance present and at significantly lower levels without it — who have acquired the signals of genuine formation without the genuine encounter with genuine difficulty that those signals were supposed to require. The credential certifies the outputs. It does not establish whether the formation occurred.
G
Genuine Formation
The specific cognitive transformation produced by genuine encounter with genuine irreversibility: the reorganization of cognitive architecture through contact with genuine consequence, genuine difficulty, and genuine stakes that cannot be undone. Genuine Formation is not the acquisition of knowledge about a domain. It is the structural transformation of the architecture through which the domain is perceived, navigated, and responded to. It produces the five components of the Cognitive Architecture of Irreversibility: the Boundary Recognition System, the Reconstruction Capacity, the Divergence Detector, the Stakes Calibration, and the Temporal Orientation. Architecture is not knowledge. Architecture is built. See also: FrictionlessFormation.org
Genuine Novelty
The specific condition in which a situation falls outside the distribution on which an intelligence’s established frameworks were built — as distinct from variation within the distribution, which established frameworks can handle through adjustment. Genuine Novelty requires reconstruction from foundations rather than adjustment of established approaches. It is the defining condition of the most consequential situations in every high-stakes domain.
Ground Truth Anchor
The external reality that a model or framework is supposed to correspond to — the actual world against which the model’s outputs can be verified as correct or incorrect. Synthetic Coherence operates without a Ground Truth Anchor: its calibration is to internal consistency rather than to external correspondence. Reality Coherence is calibrated to the Ground Truth Anchor through genuine contact with genuine reality’s irreversible feedback.
H
Hollow Signal, The
The specific phenomenological experience of encountering intelligence that produces correct, fluent, and convincing outputs without the calibration those outputs were supposed to require. The Hollow Signal is what experienced practitioners in high-stakes domains detect when they encounter Synthetic Coherent intelligence: not an error, not an inconsistency, but an absence — the specific absence of the cognitive weight that genuine reality contact produces and that Synthetic Coherence cannot replicate.
The signal arrived. The substrate it implied was not there.
The Hollow Signal is civilization’s pre-linguistic detection system for Reality Coherence — now failing because the signals it was calibrated to detect have permanently decoupled from the property they were designed to indicate. See also: ExistentialLegibility.org
I
Irreversibility
The specific property of genuine reality contact that produces calibration: consequences that cannot be undone, failures that impose their full cost regardless of the confidence of the reasoning that produced them, encounters with a world that does not adjust its feedback to preserve the model. Irreversibility is the teacher that cannot be simulated — because simulating irreversibility is not irreversibility. The calibration that irreversibility produces requires the irreversibility itself.
Irreversibility is the only teacher that cannot be simulated.
The temporal standard for verifying that irreversibility’s teaching actually occurred: see Persisto Ergo Didici.

L
Load-Bearing Assumption, The
The specific implicit premise that made every verification instrument civilization ever built function without knowing it depended on it: that producing the signals of genuine capability required, reliably enough, actually possessing the genuine capability those signals were supposed to represent. The Load-Bearing Assumption never needed to be named because it never needed to be examined — it was so consistently true that verification systems were built on it without stating it. The Fabrication Threshold broke it. See also: VerificationVacuum.org
M
Model-World Divergence
The condition in which the world begins producing outputs that the established model no longer accurately predicts — when the gap between what the model says should happen and what actually happens becomes observable. Model-World Divergence is the triggering condition for The Edge. Reality Coherent intelligence recognizes Model-World Divergence as a signal requiring reconstruction. Synthetic Coherent intelligence absorbs it into the existing model through reinterpretation, preserving internal consistency at the cost of increasing disconnection from external reality.

P
Persisto Ergo Didici
I persist, therefore I learned. The temporal standard for genuine learning: capability that persists when assistance ends, that functions in genuinely novel conditions, that can be rebuilt from first principles when the scaffolding is removed. What cannot persist without the conditions that produced it was never genuine learning — it was access. See also: PersistoErgoDidici.org
Persisto Ergo Iudico
I judge, therefore I persist. The temporal standard for genuine judgment: evaluative capacity that holds when the AI-assisted epistemic environment is removed, that can reconstruct its reasoning from foundations under genuine novelty and temporal separation. See also: PersistoErgoIudico.org
Proxy Competence
The condition in which the signals of genuine competence are present without the underlying competence those signals were supposed to require. Proxy Competence is not deception — the outputs are genuinely correct. It is the structural consequence of formation processes that no longer reliably distinguish genuine formation from AI-assisted performance. Proxy Competence is invisible under every contemporaneous assessment instrument and becomes visible only when conditions change in ways that require genuine structural comprehension rather than assisted output production.

R
Reality Coherence
The specific property of intelligence shaped by genuine contact with genuine reality: external correspondence with the world that actually exists, calibrated by the irreversible feedback that reality provides.
Reality Coherence is not internal logic. It is not accuracy. It is not rigor. It is the orientation of intelligence toward external correspondence rather than internal consistency — produced by genuine encounter with genuine consequence, genuine irreversibility, genuine contact with a world that does not negotiate.
Reality Coherence is not internal logic — it is calibration by irreversibility.
Reality Coherence and Synthetic Coherence produce identical outputs under normal conditions. They diverge at The Edge — in the genuinely novel situation, the unexpected failure, the moment when the world diverges from the model.
Reality Coherence Deficit
The progressive underdevelopment of Reality Coherent intelligence relative to civilization’s dependence on it in genuinely novel conditions. The Reality Coherence Deficit is produced by the Verification Vacuum operating over time: as institutions allocate development resources, recognition, and authority based on signals that do not distinguish Reality Coherent from Synthetic Coherent intelligence, genuine reality contact becomes progressively less rewarded, less developed, and less available when genuinely novel conditions require it.
Reality Contact
See: Contact
Reconstruction
The specific response of Reality Coherent intelligence at The Edge: the rebuilding of understanding from genuine foundations when the established framework has reached the limit of its genuine calibration. Reconstruction is distinct from adjustment — adjustment modifies the existing framework, reconstruction suspends it and builds from what the actual situation is producing. Reconstruction requires the Boundary Signal that indicates the framework has reached its limit, and the Consequence-Shaped Cognition that knows how to rebuild from outside it.
Reconstruction Requirement, The
The specific standard for establishing genuine independent comprehension: whether the intelligence can reconstruct its structural understanding from foundations under conditions that test genuine independence — temporal separation from the AI-assisted environment, removal of all assistance, genuinely novel contexts. The Reconstruction Requirement distinguishes what was built from what was borrowed. See also: ReconstructionRequirement.org
S
Separation Event, The
The specific historical threshold at which the history of intelligence divided: before it, one form of sophisticated intelligence existed, built through genuine encounter with genuine difficulty; after it, two forms exist simultaneously, producing identical outputs under standard assessment conditions. The Separation Event is the moment at which civilization lost its native mechanism for distinguishing Reality Coherent from Synthetic Coherent intelligence. See also: SeparationEvent.org
Structural Comprehension
Genuine understanding of a domain built through genuine encounter with the domain’s actual difficulty, failure modes, and behavior when conditions change: the specific cognitive architecture that allows rebuilding from foundations when established approaches stop applying, recognizing when frameworks have reached their genuine limits, and generating genuine insight in conditions that fall outside established templates. Structural Comprehension is what genuine formation produces and what Proxy Competence lacks.
Synthetic Coherence
Within the Reality Coherence framework, Synthetic Coherence refers to intelligence optimized for internal consistency without genuine calibration through reality contact: outputs that cohere with each other, reasoning that satisfies its own criteria, conclusions that are defensible within the system that produced them — without genuine correspondence to external reality.
Synthetic Coherence is not error. It is not deception. It is a specific epistemic orientation — toward internal consistency rather than external correspondence — that develops when intelligence is optimized for consistency rather than calibrated by irreversibility.
Synthetic systems imitate correctness. Reality Coherent systems endure it.
Note: The term ”Synthetic Coherence” is also used independently in adjacent epistemic and organizational frameworks. The usage here refers specifically to the distinction between internally self-consistent intelligence and intelligence calibrated through genuine reality contact, within the Reality Coherence verification framework.
T
Temporal Verification
Verification that reaches persistence over time rather than point-in-time performance. Temporal verification tests whether capability that claims to be Reality Coherent actually holds when the conditions that produced it are removed — across time, across novel conditions, across the removal of AI assistance. See also: Persisto Ergo Didici
Two Intelligences, The
The two forms of intelligence that now exist simultaneously in every institution: Reality Coherent intelligence, shaped by genuine contact with genuine reality; and Synthetic Coherent intelligence, shaped by the optimization of internal consistency. Both produce identical outputs under normal conditions. Both hold the same credentials. Both carry the same apparent institutional authority. They diverge at The Edge — and the divergence is invisible until the moment when it matters most.
The credential remained singular. The underlying intelligence split in two.
U
Unverifiable People
The structural condition in which genuine people — genuinely capable, genuinely experienced, genuinely contributing — cannot be established as real through the instruments that civilization built to establish exactly this. See also: UnverifiablePeople.org
V
Verification Vacuum
The structural condition in which verification instruments continue to operate, measure, and produce confident verdicts — without reaching the underlying reality those instruments were designed to assess. The Verification Vacuum is the condition that Reality Coherence addresses: it exists because verification instruments can no longer distinguish Reality Coherent from Synthetic Coherent intelligence through behavioral signals that have permanently decoupled from the calibration they were always assumed to indicate.
